Fences make excellent barrier blocks to prevent any mobs from crossing an area, but these can also be utilized in other ways. Here is a list of all the ways on how to be able to use a fence in Minecraft effectively.

How To Use A Fence in Minecraft

Fences are one of the most accessible materials to craft in the game. And as one of the first craftable blocks that the players can obtain, they prove to be just as valuable for all sorts of things in Minecraft. Like in real life, where fences are used primarily to act as a barrier or a railing that encloses or separates a certain area from one another, so does the fences in Minecraft. And while fences are used as such, they can also be used as more than just a boundary or gate for your base. It is all well and good to use fences to block off certain areas that are easily accessible to hostile mobs such as zombies, skeletons, and creepers. Still, fences make excellent decoration materials and can also act as a source of fuel in a furnace. Essential or not, having a few fences around will come in handy, especially in times when you need them.

How To Craft A Fence in Minecraft

The player must have at least four wooden planks and two sticks to craft a fence. This will produce three fences per crafting. Double the number of ingredients in the recipe to create more fences. The wooden planks must be of the same wood type, producing the corresponding fence type. To craft a regular wooden fence, refer to the image for the recipe below:

To craft a nether brick fence, you will only need six nether bricks, which you can obtain in a nether fortress. Simple place each brick in a horizontal pattern on the second and third rows respectively in the 3×3 crafting grid.

Regular fences are made out of wooden materials such as planks and sticks. Planks can be obtained by simply crafting out logs in a crafting table. And sticks can be obtained from those planks with the same method in crafting. The kind of fence produced will depend on the materials used for crafting. An example of this is when dark oak planks are produced from dark oak logs, and the same dark oak planks will be used to craft a fence; thus, dark oak fences will be produced out of the crafting process. The same method goes for all the wooden fences and the nether brick variation.

1. Fences Used As Barrier Blocks

1 2

Although fences are primarily used as barrier blocks to block off certain areas in the game and were mainly made to be used, there is no denying that this is still the best way to utilize them. Even when certain mobs such as spiders may still climb over them and would probably need additional materials to prevent this from happening, fences are still good at keeping other hostile mobs such as creepers and zombies at bay. For certain mobs such as skeletons and piglins that use a bow and arrow as weapons, the fences can be stacked on top of each other to prevent their arrows from reaching the inside of your fence barrier. One of the best ways to fully utilize these fences is by placing torches on the fences themselves and the inside of the fenced area to successfully prevent hostile mobs that spawn in dark places from getting inside the well-lit enclosed area. For players to walk through fences, they will need a fence gate placed between two fences. This makes passing through the fence barrier easy and hassle-free while keeping the hostile mobs away.

2. Fences Used For Lead Tethering

1 3

Leads are craftable items in Minecraft that allow players to attach a leash to a mob to make them follow the player. As most players already know, passive mobs such as cows and pigs may be led around by using each of their favorite food items. But this method can be tricky, especially when the mob loses interest and wanders off on its own. Luckily, leads were added into the game to make this method easier for players who want to secure the mob and prevent it from roaming around unattended. But when placing leads on mobs, the end of the lead will primarily be attached to the player, thus making the mob obediently follow the player wherever they go. Another block must be used to secure the mob in a specific location. This is where the fence comes in. Fences can be used to attach the other end of the lead when a mob is leashed. The player must place down the fence in a spot, leash the lead to the mob, then place the other end on the fence. This restricts the movement of the mob completely, thus making it stationary until the lead is broken. This is especially useful for naturally wandering passive mobs such as horses. The player can easily tie their horse anywhere while on a journey away from their base, especially when setting up camp for the night—as horses tend to walk around on their own whether they are tamed or not.

3. Fences Used As Decoration Blocks

1 4

An underrated way to use fences is by using them as decoration blocks. In Minecraft, players are given different blocks to craft other materials. But the game itself does not provide players with full pieces of furniture to use as decorations for their base. The player must join and stack different blocks to build furniture, houses, and other structures. Fences can be used as part of these building blocks to create furniture such as tables, chairs, drawers, and cabinets or structures such as bridges and stables. Minecraft fences also come in 7 different styles—namely oak fence, spruce fence, birch fence, jungle fence, acacia fence, dark oak fence, and nether brick fence—based on the materials used for crafting. This makes fences great for creating different kinds and styles of furniture.

4. Fences Used As Fuel Source

As almost all of the fences are made out of wood, they—like other wooden crafted materials in Minecraft—can be used as a fuel source in a furnace. Although they are not the most efficient for smelting ores, food, and other items, they can still be used as fuel as they are made out of wood, only except for nether brick fences. A single fence can smelt 1.5 items when used as a fuel source. This indicates that one fence can smelt a maximum of 1 item and another half of an item. This also means that in using a fence as fuel, the smelting will require you to finish the remaining half of the second item’s smelting process using another fence or a different fuel source.

5. Fences Used For Note Blocks

1 6

Note blocks are crafted from redstone in Minecraft that play a particular sound or note based on what block it is currently placed on. There are about 16 different instruments with 16 different pitches, and one of them will use a fence. When placed below a note block, any wooden fence such as a jungle fence, acacia fence, and dark oak fence will produce a bass-like sound when struck by hand or powered by a Redstone mechanism. The nether brick fence can also be used on a note block, but it will produce a bass drum sound instead of a bass sound when played.
