Twitch streamer and speedrunner Liam Kings recently came within seconds of setting a new Super Mario 64 world record, until an unlucky incident ruined the dream.

It’s not all bad news though, as Liam still holds the number one world record spot in Super Mario 64. The streamer set the record back in 2021 on November 7th, with a time of 1:37:53.4.

During one of his recent live streams, Liam was making good progress to beating his very own record, until it came to one of the final Bowser throws and all hope was lost.

Speedrunner Misses Out On New Mario 64 World Record

Liam was down to the final Bowser throw, hitting the first two shots with ease. Unfortunately, on the third throw, the streamer missed his shot, but that wasn’t even the worst of it.

After missing the shot, Liam lets out a sigh but quickly composes himself and tries to salvage what he can. After Bowser lands back down, Liam makes his move to go back in, but didn’t take into account how close he was to the edge of the map. This resulted in a catastrophic failure of poor Mario plummeting off the side of the map.

Clearly frustrated, Liam lets out a “what the fuck, why is he on the edge of the fucking map?”, he continued “I’ve never seen him stop there in my fucking life”. We feel your pain Liam, we feel it.

According to the streamers overlay, he was on track for a world record time of 1:37:39. This would have shaved off a total of 14 seconds from his current world record. Some fans even speculated that with the failed Bowser throw attempt, it still would have been a massive 10 seconds off his current world record.

Unfortunately, it was game over once he fell off the edge of map. You can check out the clip below to see the fail, and make sure to check out Liam’s Twitch channel too to keep up to date with all of his speedrunning attempts.
