Sonic the Hedgehog to get third live-action movie & Knuckles TV spin-off in the works
Sega & Paramount have announced a third live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie is in development, alongside a TV series spin-off featuring Knuckles.
The companies announced the news during Paramount’s investor event last night. As Deadline report, the series will launch on their streaming service Paramount+ in 2023 and will see Idris Elba return to voice Knuckles. It’s especially significant as the second movie, which will introduce the Echidna to the live-action universe, isn’t even out yet.
Over on Twitter, the official Sonic the Hedgehog account confirmed the news with a statement from Sega CEO, Haruki Satomi. “We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed. We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them”.
There’s good news for us wanting to watch the Knuckles series in the UK too. The company also announced at the event that Paramount+ will be heading to the UK this summer. Sega and Paramount also declared that they aiming for the live-action series itself, meanwhile, to arrive in 2023. It’ll be the latest video-game to TV adaptation on the service following the Halo series. (Which is also already greenlit for a second season.)
The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie did incredibly well, likely making the decision an easy one. It became the highest grossing video game movie of all time in the US back in 2020. The sequel arrives in UK theatres on April 1. (That’s a week before the US release, on April 8.)
