The Witcher III Game Director Unveils New Studio

Former CD Projekt executive Konrad Tomaszkiewicz has unveiled his new studio, Rebel Wolves, to the public. The team behind the studio is made of talent from around the industry, with projects they have worked on including Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher, Thornbreaker, and Shadow Warrior 2. Tomaszkiewicz, who spent 17 years at CD Projekt, is most notable for serving as the Game Director of The Witcher III, as well as head of production and secondary game director on Cyberpunk 2077.

Currently, Rebel Wolves is working on their first game, which Tomaszkiewicz told Gameindustry.biz was aimed to be “the holy grail of computer RPGs.” He stated:

We’re proud of our past achievements, but we’re hungry for more. We want to experiment, push the envelope, discover new ways for telling stories in the video game medium. We felt that starting a new company, where we call all the shots, will give us the freedom to take the necessary risks to fulfill these ambitions.

He continued by stating building a studio was something on their minds for quite some time but they needed to fully flesh out their vision before they could fully commit. When the studio was finally founded, it was done so with a simple rule. That rule was that the team comes first, with the studio being a place where “experienced game developers can reignite their passion.”

Given the collective talent at Rebel Wolves, this studio could easily be seen as a place where ambitious developers could flourish. Tomaszkiewicz also voiced his belief in going independent as the best way for the studio to fully realize these dreams:

We’re proud of the games we helped to create there and we’re deeply grateful for all the opportunities it has given us. CD Projekt works with established IPs, and we wanted to create our own universe, tailor it to our needs and preferences. Also, we want to work on smaller games, in a smaller team, where it’s easier to maintain a coherent vision.

He went on to state:

Experienced developers are sought after by all the major studios, it’s a very competitive landscape. So we’re extremely happy and proud that we’ve already managed to sign on some of the best artists, coders and designers in the industry

We can’t compete with the top dogs when it comes to size or recognition, but we can provide something just as alluring: an environment where developers can think big, follow their dreams and feel ownership over their work. Of course, there’s still plenty of challenges ahead of us, but we’re confident that with the team of talented veterans we have already gathered, nothing will stop us.

If there is one more reason to look out for this studio, it is their stance on both NFTs and the Metaverse. When asked about them, as they grow in popularity in the industry, Tomaszkiewicz stated “It’s very simple. We won’t have them in our games. Ever.”
