The Last of Us TV Series Won’t Air in 2022
The wait for The Last of Us TV series looks like it’ll be longer than anticipated. While many expected it would release this year, filming is ongoing, and an HBO exec stated that it likely won’t launch until sometime in 2023. The first season will be a retelling of the events of the first game and its Left Behind DLC.
What’s the release date for The Last of Us HBO series?
Speaking with Deadline about The Last of Us TV series, HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys stated, “It’s not going to air in 2022 — they are still shooting in Canada. I imagine you will see it in ’23.” Unfortunately, that’s the only details Bloys gave concerning the release date.
While the first season covers the original The Lost of Us title, further seasons haven’t been discussed in-depth. Producer Craig Mazin has said there will likely be a second season if the first one does well, but what material would it cover? It’d be interesting to see some of the time between the first and second games, and we’d bet that’s the period the show will end up in.
We do know that the TV show won’t follow the game exactly. In particular, Jeffrey Pierce, who played Tommy in the game, is cast as Perry, a rebel. This original character will play a big part in the events that’ll unfold. Tommy, played by Gabriel Luna, will also likely have a much more significant role in the narrative than he did in the first game.
Previous attempts to produce a The Last of Us film or TV adaptation failed. At one point, there was a Sam Raimi-produced film in the works at Sony Pictures, which was canceled. An animated short film suffered the same fate.
In other news, Sony will plant a tree each time players unlock this Horizon Forbidden West trophy, and some fans are having issues upgrading to the PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077.
