Runescape Steamforged Announcement

Venture into Gielinor in 2022 with the upcoming RuneScape tabletop RPG and board game!

Filled with medieval adventures and magical monsters, RuneScape is one of the biggest and longest-running MMORPGs. It’s gone through a total of three iterations, from the original 2001 beta to the now-running RuneScape 3 from 2013. With additional mobile versions as well as the older Old School RuneScape version, the game has given players hours upon hours of fantastical experiences.

Though the franchise is now about 21 years old, the classic game still has a vibrant community of dedicated players. Immersed in the collaborative community storytelling that comes with MMOs, players have continued to roleplay and team up with one another for group combat or simple market chats.

Now, RuneScape developer Jagex and TTRPG developer Steamforged Games aim to take that storytelling even further, bringing RuneScape to the tabletop with a new RPG and new board game.

ALL RELEASED DETAILS ON THE RUNESCAPE TABLETOP RPG AND BOARD GAME

Launching later in 2022, RuneScape will get both a tabletop RPG core book and a board game. These games are Jagex‘s first ventures into tabletop development, striving to bring the magic of Gielinor from digital to physical. Steamforged Games, on the other hand, specializes in the genre, having adapted 11 other video games into board games.

According to both studios, the games will have “fresh-but-faithful” adaptations of classic quests and characters from the original MMO. Players will be able to explore Gielinor through a new lens, taking on unique new challenges in the familiar world. Incorporating locations and events from across RuneScape‘s 21-year long history, the games weave together player-favorite elements with the physical game genres.

The RuneScape board game is built for 1-5 players – about the size of an adventuring party. Going on “quest-based campaigns” across Gielinor, players will craft equipment, level up their characters, cook, interact with NPCs, and defeat monsters.

On top of high-adventure fun, the board game will likely give players unique pieces to use. Given Steamforged Games’ extensive list of available mini-figures, it’s possible RuneScape could see its own line of minis as well. Overall, the board game is the essential RuneScape experience, perfectly crafted into a capsule for in-person play.

Following that, the tabletop RPG will present a beautifully illustrated core book, complete with rules and adapted character settings. Similar to other TTRPGs, players can customize their characters, but with the RuneScape twist. Conveniently, the RuneScape TTRPG will also be compatible with Dungeons & Dragons 5E.

The board game is set to launch on Kickstarter, while the TTRPG core book will release directly to stores.
