Activision & Xbox Deal Sparks Concern Among Indie Developers
The recent news that Microsoft is set to acquire Activision Blizzard has sent ripples throughout the indie development scene, who have expressed concern that the deal may result in independent projects getting sidelined.
One of those creators is Tanya Short, who is the brains behind Boyfriend Dungeon, telling the BBC that many indie studios are avoiding launching their games during the holiday season due to not wanting to compete with triple-A games that are typically released during that period.
This Activision acquisition strikes fear in us because it makes it so much more obvious – maybe they could dominate the rest of the year and then what do we do?
The BBC report says that Short is “one of a number of indie game developers” who have expressed their concern about Activision and Microsoft’s new partnership and what it means for the industry as a whole.

Meanwhile, the report also mentions Yura Zhadanovich, the founder of Sad Cat Studios, who had concerns about whether there would be enough support for indie developers from Microsoft as more high-profile games arrive on Xbox Game Pass.
This sentiment was also echoed by Piers Harding-Rolls, an analyst with Ampere Analysis, who told the BBC:
Conceivably, indie games outside of these services might lose engagement as subscribers focus most of their attention on games they can access for free within the service.
It’s interesting to hear these comments, and makes you wonder if Sony could potentially use this to strengthen its own relationship with indie developers going forward.
