Breathtaking ‘Gibbon: Beyond the Trees’ from ‘Old Man’s Journey’ Developer Broken Rules Heading to Apple Arcade this Month
Developer Broken Rules may not release games all that often, but when they do you can count on it being something special. Cases in point: 2017’s Old Man’s Journey and 2018’s ELOH, both Apple Design Award winners, both earning 5 stars from us in our reviews, and both absolutely gorgeous and moving experiences in their own unique ways. Now they’ve announced what their next game will be, and unsurprisingly it looks like it’s going to be another stunning experience. It’s called Gibbon: Beyond the Trees, and it focuses on a family of gibbons, which are a type of ape who are extremely agile, as they swing through the treetops of a lush, gorgeous jungle setting. It’s not all good times though, as you’ll also come across some unsettling sights of humans encroaching on the gibbons’ natural habitat. See it all in action in the following trailer.
I get a heavy Alto’s Adventure vibe from Gibbon because they are both games where you are traveling through these breathtaking environments and you could basically take a still screenshot from any point in either game and hang it on your wall as art. Broken Rules has taken special care in creating the dynamic movement system in the game, which is based on how gibbons actually move in real life. Gibbon will feature a story mode as well as a procedurally generated endless mode, and it tries to bring attention to some pretty heavy environmental topics like deforestation, poaching, and climate change. These are all huge threats to the gibbon population right now, and you can learn a lot more about that on the game’s website. Gibbon: Beyond the Trees will initally launch on Apple Arcade later this month on February 25th, with Switch and PC versions launching later in the year.
