The next-gen update fans have been waiting for is reportedly set to arrive next year, but past-gen players don’t need to worry as Call of Duty: Warzone 2 may still be releasing for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

A report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier recently revealed that Activision was committed to releasing the next three Call of Duty titles on PlayStation consoles, following their recent acquisition by Microsoft. Schreier’s sources claim that Call of Duty 2022 and 2023 will be released on PlayStation consoles, as well as Call of Duty: Warzone 2 which is also rumoured for a 2023 release.

The report was then backed up by credible insider Tom Henderson, who said that Warzone 2 will be a completely fresh start and only available for next-gen and PC. However, it looks like that might not necessarily be the case anymore.

Warzone 2 Still Coming To Past-Gen Consoles

Henderson took to Twitter earlier today to inform Call of Duty fans that Warzone 2 could still be coming to past-gen consoles, such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox one, but the decision is dependent on one thing.

Decisions are always changing behind the scenes, but Henderson reports that Activision is considering a past-gen release for Warzone 2 should the sales of next-gen consoles continue to struggle.

Although both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are selling like hotcakes, many users are still struggling to get their hands on the new consoles due to an ongoing chip shortage. This is of course a major factor that must be considered by developers and publishers when developing a new title.

Unfortunately, if Warzone 2 is released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, there won’t be any form of cross-generation play as they will be two completely different versions.

I was just told this morning that there is the possibility of “Warzone 2” coming to past generation consoles for the MW2 map of current generation consoles sales don’t perform well.

It’s my understanding that they’ll be no cross-gen playability as they’ll be different versions.

Henderson also went on to divulge further information on Warzone 2, stating that the game is being developed due to the original title needing a complete re-work. Alongside this, fans can likely expect the original Warzone to be rebranded as ‘Warzone Legacy‘ with the sequel taking over the name of Warzone.

However, although Henderson is a reliable source when it comes to all things Call of Duty, it’s important to take this information with a grain of salt until it’s made official by Activision themselves.
