Chrono Cross Remaster Announced During Nintendo Direct

Chrono Cross, the PlayStation sequel to the beloved Super Nintendo game Chrono Trigger has finally been announced during the February Nintendo Direct, after months of rumors including the Nvidia datamine suggesting it was a thing. Entitled Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, will allow gamers to discover, or rediscover, why this game should be on every JRPG gamers list.

While not a direct sequel to the original game, Chrono Cross does continue the story that was begun in the time-hopping Chrono Trigger. This time around, instead of time travel the game explores parallel universes, following lead character Serge as he finds himself a world in which he was killed by a large wave as a child, an event he lived through in his original universe.

From there, the game takes these themes further by introducing 40 characters that the main character can recruit to his party with varying choices he can make changing who can be recruited. On top of that, these choices can change the ultimate ending of the game, another element the game carries over from Chrono Trigger.

The game has received multiple enhancements with its character models being the most obvious, similar to how Square Enix has enhanced the original PlayStation era Final Fantasy titles. The game also now features the ability to turn off enemy encounters, as well as a newly enhanced soundtrack.

The game takes its subtitle from the Radical Dreamers text-based adventure game which was released on the Satellaview in 1996, which will be included in this remastered version making it available for the first time in the west. The game was intended to help clear up plotholes left unresolved at the end of Chrono Trigger, following similar plot points to those that would be used in Chrono Cross three years later, particularly the main characters.  A desire to redo Radical Dreamers properly was what lead director Masato Kato to create a full sequel to the Super Nintendo title.

Despite being announced on Nintendo’s stage, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition will be available for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One when it releases April 7, 2022.
