How has Fortnite kept its popularity?
Fortnite is a game that has dominated for so long now that it is hard to imagine a time where there was no such thing as Fortnite. However, it is hard to believe that the popularity is still this big considering the game has been out for a long time, so how have Epic Games done this?
The start of something
Fortnite was first released in July 2017 and was an instant hit with its Battle Royale style gaming and more importantly it was free to play. People downloaded it as soon as they could with the early access and absolutely loved it.
The game was split into two modes (three in 2018 with Fortnite Creative) but the Save the World mode, where players in a survival style game play, was released first and before the end of August there were over a million players. They then released the free to play Battle Royale style and within the first two weeks of release there was over 10 million players playing the game.
The Battle Royale style is the most played part of Fortnite and one that has inspired other games like Call of Duty: Warzone. In less than a year of its release it drew in 125 million players and it was cultural phenomenon. Twitch became inundated with Fortnite, betting companies were getting involved with e-sports and the news was focusing on all aspects of children playing Fortnite.
What makes it fun?
There are great different game modes depending on how you are feeling. You have the choice of playing solo, in a duo, in a trio or as a squad. It makes the game much more interactive when you can play with your friends or jump on with other players from around the world.
If you set yourself some goals as to what you want to achieve from the game then you can enjoy the game more. Many people set goals such as trying to win a Battle Royale or even winning back to back Battle Royales or some even want to be creative mid game and see how much they can build.
So how does a game from 2017 still keep itself relevant?
You cannot just keep the same thing in a game these days and expect people to just continually keep playing it. Epic games realised that and introduced the idea of seasons. During these seasons they will include new weapons, costumes, and collectibles, it keeps the player interested in what new might be coming out.
They also include in app purchases with a lot of costumes resembling celebrities or characters from comic books. Fortnite have included Marshamello, Travis Scott, Ninja, Green Goblin, Spiderman and many more fun character costumes.
The map is also updated throughout and fans are happy that one of their favourite areas Tilted Towers has returned for Chapter Three.
Epic games also introduced a matchmaking feature that allowed beginners a great chance of getting a feel for the game rather than being killed within the first few seconds of the game. This might be good for beginners but it has frustrated many high skill players who are now working even harder to win Battle Royale games.
E-sports events
E-sports also keeps it relevant for people as well. The prize pot for a tournament in 2020 was $7.88 million. Fortnite is the third leading eSports game in the world. Fortnite even hold World Cups, prior to the pandemic with Bugha taking home $3 million. With reports of another World Cup in 2022 it might be time to start looking at the best betting offers today for tournaments in preparation for a World Cup.
This is what is keeping 80.4 million Fortnite monthly users active and enjoying playing the game. Not bad for Epic Games considering they used the Battle Royale idea from PUBG: Battlegrounds and created their own within two months!
Will it continue?
There is no signs of Fortnite slowing down with the latest chapter updated and players just as excited to play the game. Epic Games know that they have a winner and real pot of gold so they know they cannot mess it up.
It is certainly not the game it was with some hardcore players but you are not going to please everyone about everything. However, with a younger generation it is still their passion, it is still what they love and they will continue to keep playing it as long as Epic Games make the right adjustments each season.
