Itch.io reveals stance on NFTs: “NFTs are a scam”
Itch.io, the indie game marketplace, has confirmed its stance on NFTs and made clear that it believes that NFTs have no place in a marketplace, and are a scam. The company took to social media to confirm its stance and released a statement on the matter after it was asked by customers what it thought of the latest trend some game companies have tried to back in the last few months. The statement from itch.io can be read below.
“A few have asked about our stance on NFTs: NFTs are a scam. If you think they are legitimately useful for anything other than the exploitation of creators, financial scams, and the destruction of the planet the we ask that you please re-evaluate your life choices. Also f̸̗̎ú̴̩c̷̖͌ḳ̵̀ any company that says they support creators and also endorses NFTs in any way. They only care about their own profit and the opportunity for wealth above anyone else. Especially given the now easily available discourse concerning the problems of NFTs. How can you be so dense?”
NFTs have be thrown into the spotlight over the past year, with numerous major publishers expressing an interest and testing the waters with their own NFT sales. Ubisoft launched Quartz as a new platform (and then said that people just don’t “get it” when people hated the decision), Square Enix has announced future NFTs, Konami has launched a range of digital artwork, and on and on. GSC Game Worlds attempted to sell a custom character in STALKER 2 through a NFT. Team17 was the latest company that announced it would back NFTs, a move that surprised staff that were not consulted as well as industry partners. Aggro Crab announced it would not work with Team17 in the future. The backlash led to Team17 backing away from NFTs and cancelling its plans to sell NFTs.
