KH1: The Best Summons In The Game (All Ranked)
Summons has always been an overlooked mechanic in Kingdom Hearts games.
You get the summon item and tend to forget about it or just use it once.
Sure, you can get through the game completely fine without the help of these characters. But where is the fun?
The summons gives some Disney characters, who may only appear in one world or not appear at all, a chance to shine.
Some provide flashy and decent attack power, while others are there to back you up with healing and support. Even if they’re not overpowered, it can be nice to fight alongside your favorite characters.
Today we’ll be looking at all the summons from the original Kingdom Hearts to see who’s the best of the bunch!
KH1: The Best Summons In The Game (All Ranked) 6. Simba
Starting off we have the King of Pride Rock, Simba!
Simba has one of the best summoning animations in KH1, definitely something you’ll always remember as a kid.
Sadly, that’s about all Simba has going for him.
His Charge Up attacks are strong but incredibly slow. The longer you hold the charge, the more damage Proud Roar will deal.
But it is useful against a crowd of slow enemies as it clears the area.
Going against the faster ruthless will prove to be a bit difficult to pull off. If you manage to get away from the Heartless to have time to perform an attack, then you will be golden.
How to get: You will get Simba’s summon gem from Leon after your second visit to Traverse Town.
5. Genius
After a chaotic screaming intro, Genie is here to grant your strength wish.
Genie is probably the most complex summon in KH1, as all of her gimmicks are random cast spells and lightning bolts.
When Sora locks onto a target, Genie will choose random spells from her command menu. These can be gravity, parry, an item, or other attacks.
Using Genie is practically like rolling dice or a slot machine. Which can be a lot of fun or pointlessly unpredictable.
Either way, you’re in for an eye-catching moment.
How to Obtain: Genie joins the fight after sealing the keyhole in Agrabah.
4. Mushū
Mushu is an easy to learn one-trick pony.
After summoning it, it will perch on your head and shoot out small fireballs like a small, unstable Gatling gun.
These fireballs aren’t too powerful and can be annoying to aim up close. But they can be used to try to interrupt enemy attacks and combos, although better options are available.
It can also come in handy when flying around Neverland, as it can basically turn you into a laser-shooting spaceship.
This sounds useful, but chances are you’ll be done with Neverland by the time you get Mushu.
The poor, powerful Guardian really can’t compare to the rest of the summons.
How to Obtain: Mushu’s gem will drop after defeating Maleficent in her Dragon form.
3. Dumbo
Dumbo, the lovable little elephant that no one would hurt a fly, is actually the tackiest summon in the game.
Very strange, I know.
When you summon Dumbo, you shrink down to tiny Sora and cling to Dumbo’s hat, riding it for the duration of the summoning.
During your pleasure ride similar to the Disneyland attraction, no one can hurt you.
That’s right, riding Dumbo gives you immunity.
Dumbo will launch splashes of water that will damage nearby enemies and drain their MP. You can tactically use Dumbo to deal a lot of damage without worrying about your own health, which can be incredibly useful in boss fights.
How to Obtain: This summon gem can be found inside a chest in Monstro’s mouth.
2. Bambi
Bambi is a lover, not a fighter. So it won’t hit enemies like the other summons.
Instead, Bambi is here to deliver lots of gifts and treats!
After you summon him, Bambi will continuously drop MP orbs around Sora, increasing the amount he drops with each enemy Sora defeats.
This can be super fun to have, as Sora can spam countless spells without spending much MP. Not only does it drop MP, but when its charge gauge is full, it drops a special item for you to pick up.
Fill her gauge 3 times and she’ll even drop a synthesis item! What a good boy!
How to get: From Merlin after returning the first set of torn pages from the Book of Pooh.
1. Tinkerbell
Tinker Bell is possibly the most useful summon in the game.
Unlike the rest of the summons, she does not take over any slots from party members and does not have a summon indicator.
And like Bambi, Tinker Bell is fragile. So don’t expect her to help you with your fight.
Instead, it flies around Sora and heals you while you continue to fight.
This can be really useful for many reasons, one of which is that you can continue combos without worrying about having to heal in between.
Not only does it give you a healing boost, but if Sora is knocked down in battle, Tinker will do a Legend of Zelda fairy move and revive you.
This is basically an additional second chance and can be the difference between victory and game over.
How to Obtain: She will help you on your journey after sealing the keyhole in Neverland.
