Klonoa is set for a major comeback later this year. Announced during the most recent Nintendo Direct broadcast, remasters of both main games in the series will launch in July 2022.

The two titles are being paired together in the Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series bundle. It’s not just for Nintendo Switch either, also releasing on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

There had been rumours of a Klonoa remake in circulation for years, recently stoked by publisher Bandai Namco’s registering of trademarks. Here’s a quick snapshot of what’s on offer, via Nintendo:

Klonoa is back! Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series brings back Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil remastered in one collection to fans new and old. Get ready to set off on an adventure to save the world!

• Run and jump while using your Wind Ring to grab and throw your enemies. Adjust the difficulty levels to test your skills.

• Enlist a friend in 2 player co-op, if you need help.

Over the years the massive-eared mascot has appeared in a number of handheld titles and spin-offs for platforms including the Game Boy Advance and WonderSwan. In 2008, Bandai Namco attempted to revive the series with a remake of the first game for the Nintendo Wii.

However, despite the original PS1 game and its sequel being fondly remembered by fans, Klonoa never became platforming royalty. A lack of commercial success meant that a GameCube port of Klonoa 2 was canned, Namco Bandai choosing not to remake the game for Nintendo Wii.

The hope for Bandai Namco and fans of the series is that it discovers a new fanbase, there’s ground for a sequel. We’ll just have to see when it lands in July!
