Mortal Kombat 2 is in Development
2021’s Mortal Kombat movie may have been kind of a mixed bag, but it looks like New Line Cinema is ready for one more trip into the Nether Realm.
As per Deadline, Mortal Kombat 2 is officially in development, and Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) has been hired to write the script. We don’t have any details on what the story of the sequel could be about, but maybe this time we’ll actually get to see the actual tournament.
Like I said, the 2021 film came out kind of a mixed bag. Aesthetically, the film was great, with character design and VFX coming out stellar; not to mention the fight scenes looked amazing with absolutely brutal fatalities faithful to the game.
The weakness comes with the overall writing and story. Not only did the movie come up with some new “arcane” explanation for how characters got their powers, but the film tried to introduce a new character named Cole Young (Lewis Tan) who didn’t manage to win over audiences. If you asked me, they should have just had him take on the Scorpion mantle by the end of the movie, or have him adapt a stage name for Hollywood—like Johnny Cage.
Despite criticisms of the film, it looks like we’re going to be seeing more of these fighters on the big screen. Hopefully by the time the movie comes out, we actually get to go to theaters; too bad MK had to settle for an HBO Max release because the movie sure was a spectacle.
Mortal Kombat 2 is yet to receive an official release date.
