PS5 Reportedly Sold Through 1.6 Times More Than Xbox Series X/S in 2021
Market research and intelligence firm Ampere Analysis claims that Sony sold 1.6 times more PlayStation 5 consoles in 2021 than Xbox Series X/S. Sony recently revealed that it has shipped over 17 million PS5s thus far, and although the next-gen console has fallen behind the PS4 at the same point in their lifecycles due to supply shortages, Ampere Analysis’ Piers Harding-Rolls believes that the global sales momentum is with Sony.
PS5 vs Xbox Series X sales: How many consoles has Microsoft sold?
Microsoft tends to keep its sales data to itself, but Ampere Analysis has estimated that Xbox Series X/S global installed base at the end of 2021 was somewhere around 10.5 million. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, though. Granted Microsoft has sold more Xbox consoles this time around than any other time in its history, the company still doesn’t have a foothold in numerous international markets, especially in Asian countries. But this is of little consolation to Sony, who’s still struggling to produce enough PS5s to keep up with its own last-gen console.
“The monumental effort made to overcome supply chain challenges for the first full year of the PS5’s lifecycle hit a brick wall in the last two months of 2021,” Harding-Rolls wrote. “Lower than expected sales, particularly in December, means that PS5 sales performance has fallen behind the previous generation PS4. It is unlikely that this course will be corrected until at least later in 2022, but more likely into 2023, and will depend on what is an unpredictable component supply chain environment.”
In the meantime, Nintendo is enjoying stock availability. Switch sales have reached 100 million units, having seen its sales amplified by the release of the OLED model. After the disappointing performance of Wii U, Nintendo redeemed itself with the Switch, whose worldwide lifetime sales have surpassed those of the original PlayStation.
