The announcement comes in a busy year for the Sonic franchise as a whole. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set for a theatrical release on 8th April, and there’s the upcoming release of the Sonic Frontiers video game later this year. Sega has recently been celebrating 30 years of the blue blur, as well.

It’s probably no surprise that Sega and Paramount want to keep the movie franchise going, the first film ending up as a success story from an otherwise dismal 2020 – it helped that it released just before the pandemic happened. The sequel will see Ben Scwatz return as Sonic, and Jim Carey as Dr. Robotnik, while Colleen O’Shaughnessey will lend her voice to Tails, having voiced the character in numerous games over the past decade, and Idris Elba will pop in to play Knuckles.

Speaking of Idris Elba, will Paramount throw down enough money to secure him to voice Knuckles in the TV series? Was this, perhaps, the plan all along and already penned into his contract? We’ll have to wait and see.

We’ll also have to wait and see where the third film takes Sonic and chums. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is certainly taking some inspiration from how the video games evolved, drawing in characters from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, 3 and Knuckles, but there’s plenty more for the films to draw upon. Considering that the second film’s logo highlights Tails’ twin-tails, the third film’s logo has people speculating that the red 3 could mean the appearance of Shadow the Hedgehog as a new antagonist, or (perhaps more likely) that it will draw upon Sonic CD, which introduced Metal Sonic and Sonic’s girlfriend Amy Rose.

It’s been a busy night for Paramount, who have been getting into video game adaptations in a big way. Not only did the Sonic news drop, but the company has already greenlit a second season of the Halo TV Series, the first season not set to premiere until March.
