SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Millie & Molly’, ‘Maglam Lord’, ‘Swords & Bones’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales
Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for February 4th, 2022. This week apparently isn’t going down without a fight, as we’ve got an even larger list of new games to look at today than we did yesterday. There are also a bunch of new sales to check out, capped off with a list of the discounts expiring this weekend. Let’s get to it!
New Releases Millie & Molly ($4.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
If you remember a Game Boy game called Catrap, you’ll find Millie & Molly very familiar. Very, very familiar. It plays almost the same in fact, all the way down to the rewind feature that lets you take some moves back. Your goal on each single-screen stage is to defeat all of the monsters by slamming into them. You can’t jump, so you need to plan your moves very carefully. It originally came out on the Commodore 64 a couple of years ago, and now it’s on your Switch. If you’re a puzzle game fan, you’ll have a blast working your way through its one hundred challenging stages.
Alexio ($4.99)
This is a cute ultra-tough platformer about a duck seeking a monobrow. I don’t know. Platform about and try not to die too much, lest you lose your progress. Dying too often on a stage will send you back to the start, and you’ll even have to collect items to get a password if you want to save your progress. Kind of a frustrating game for me due to some control issues, but maybe you’ll like it more than I did.
Swords & Bones ($7.99)
If you’re looking for a side-scrolling action game to play today, you might want to consider this one. It has a bit of a Castlevania/Ghosts ‘n Goblins vibe to its aesthetic, and it plays well enough. The game’s fifty-plus levels have lots of enemies to battle and secrets to find, and you’re able to upgrade your character as you go. Nothing too special about this game, but it does what it needs to.
The Song Out of Space ($4.99)
This is a Lovecraftian adventure game set in 1960s America during the height of the Cold War. Choose between two agents who are sent to investigate the deaths of twelve astronomers at a deep-space observatory. Something suspicious is going on in the little nearby town, and you’ll have to sort out the truth. Was it an accident? The Russians? Or something else? Hm, I guess I gave that away by saying it’s a Lovecraftian adventure game. Sorry about that! Solve the mystery, try to stay sane, and make your way to one of four different endings. If nothing else, it certainly has a distinct look.
Land of Screens ($5.99)
Big mood, screenshot. Big mood. In this point-and-click style adventure game, the protagonist Holland has just has a messy break-up. Her social media is ablaze, and she decides she needs to step away and get a dose of real life. She decides she’s going to make sure other people see things her way, and you need to help her. Everyone is looking at their screens all the time! Ooh, I hate that! I am going to post a Minion meme now. Anyway, figure out how to get people to put down their phones, tablets, and games. You know, get them to unplug and talk face to face, like we did in the old days. INSERT GROGU MEME HERE. I find it funny the game is pushing this kind of message through a video game of all things. Good luck, I guess.
MAGLAM LORD ($39.99)
Not sure why the title is shouting, but I’m not going to rain on its parade. This action-RPG has a story from the writer behind Summon Night and character designs from one of the artists behind Fate Grand Order. You play as a depowered demon lord named Killizzerk who is the last of their kind. You seek to bring your species back from the brink of extinction, which will involve exploring the world, engaging in battles, and wooing potential partners. I’ll have a proper review of this one for you early next week.
Polgar Magic Detective: Murder Mystery Journey ($14.99)
This hidden object adventure game makes its way over from mobile and PC, and that screenshot sure doesn’t bode well for the writing if you’re playing it in English. You play as a magic detective investigating the case of a murdered writer. There’s evidence that a magical beast was responsible for the killing, but who sent it and why? You can try the game out for free on your mobile device if you want to get a taste before making a purchase decision.
Our Winter Sports ($12.72)
The characters may still be erasers, but we’re venturing off of the desktops for this new sports game from SAT-BOX. Up to four players via local multiplayer can challenge ten different events. Snowboarding, alpine skiing, ice hockey, speed skating, ice fishing, curling, biathlon, ski jump, snowmobile, and the snowball fight are all included, giving you the taste of growing up in rural Canada. Well, it’s another hockey game for the Switch at least. If you’ve played any of SAT-BOX’s Desktop Sports games, you’ll probably know what to expect here. If you haven’t? Eh, it’s alright.
Space Party ($3.99)
Wow, a space party? What kind of stuff do they do at a space party? Apparently, they play Pong. Well, more like Warlords than Pong, but still very Pong-ish. Play with up to eight players in local multiplayer or take on AI opponents. Guard your goal and bounce the balls back. Random events and special ball attacks mix things up a little. Ultimately still close enough to Pong that it shares many of its strengths and weaknesses.
Math Gym ($3.99)
Hook Games doesn’t exactly put together the most dazzling of games, and Math Gym doesn’t break that pattern. But if you want to get some regular mathematics practice, this is a cheap way to do that. There are various types of math problems to solve, with multiple difficulty settings on offer. Not really the kind of thing I use my Switch for, but maybe some of you will like it.
#1 Crosswords Sudokus Bundle ($5.99)
This is a bundle that packs in both #1 Crosswords and #1 Sudokus. You know, just in case you don’t own either and want to own both. They’re decent enough at what they do. The usual rules about bundles apply here. Check that you’re actually getting a discount before buying, as the individual games could be on sale.
Frog Ball Rerolled ($4.99)
The good news here is that Pix Arts seems to have found something that isn’t a template flip. This is a port of one of Dallen Larson’s games. He’s an indie dev who has put together a handful of games, and this is one of them. As you can guess from the screenshot, it’s a ball-roller. Not the most original thing in the world, but probably one of Pix Arts’ better releases.
Shark Adventure ($0.99)
Another crappy Gametry template flip. This one is a side-scrolling game where you play as a shark and try to collect stars while avoiding obstacles. It’s a buck.
Insert Before Flight ($12.49)
Another crappy Benjamin Kistler template flip. This one is a relatively casual flight simulator. Somehow, it costs as much as actual good games.
Let It Roll 2 Slide Puzzles ($2.99)
Another another crappy Benjamin Kistler template flip. This one is a sliding block puzzle game where you need make a route to roll the ball to the goal. At least this one is cheap.
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
It’s hard to believe we’re at a point where I see a hundred and fifty new sales or so and think about how it’s relatively small. Anyway, some 2K Games stuff in there. Cris Tales is also on sale, and Kuukiyomi 2 is at its lowest price yet. It’s not in the list because it’s not a sale, but Cruis’n Blast has permanently dropped its price to $19.99. That’s good eats if you like arcade racers. As for the weekend outbox, those who enjoy RPGs will want to make sure they’ve grabbed those Dungeons & Dragons games. They’re great deals for some great games.
