The Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot Is Getting A Sequel
New Line Cinema is working on a sequel to the Mortal Kombat movie reboot from 2021, according to a report on Deadline.
The studio has turned to Jeremy Slater, who penned Fantastic 4 and Moon Knight, to write the script for the Mortal Kombat sequel, although there’s no word on any returning cast members just yet.
Mortal Kombat (2021) was directed by Simon McQuoid and was produced by Aquaman’s James Wan, Into the Storm’s Todd Garner, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s E. Bennett Walsh. The movie wasn’t exactly a critical darling, but it managed to gross $84 million worldwide and exceed expectations set by Warner Bros.
The original Mortal Kombat movie was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and released in 1995, becoming one of the most successful video game – movie adaptations of all time and something of a favourite among fans.
The follow-up, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, launched in 1997 and saw few cast members return, awful special effects, and hammy dialogue, resulting in a massive disappointment. To be blunt, it was a bit rubbish.
Here’s hoping Mortal Kombat 2 (tentative title) will deliver the goods.
