Tim Schafer wants Double Fine to focus on more original ‘stuff’
IGN sat down with Double Fine founder Tim Schafer to get a closer look at the studio’s future. With the recent release of Psychonauts 2 winning Xbox Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards 2021, many were curious about plans moving forward. Founder Tim Schafer provided a closer look at what we can expect to see from Double Fine in the future.
The future of Double Fine
Coming off of the success of Psychonauts 2, many wonder what Double Fine plans to do with the series next. Although its predecessor initially sold poorly, it gained a cult following and was met with much praise afterward. Now that the sequel sits snugly with its award, does Schafer want to continue with more Psychonauts games?
Surprisingly, no. Schafer expressed other plans lie in the company’s future rather than more Psychonauts games.
“There’s been some technical other games that I’ve worked on that have been sequels, but the first real big follow-up to a big story was Psychonauts 2. I think it leads me to want to do new, original stuff for the next phase. Coming up with new ideas is really where my head is at right now.”
Seeing that Microsoft acquired Double Fine back in 2019, the company could potentially make use of other available Xbox IPs. Schafer lightly joked he can “finally get my revenge on King’s Quest” (remember the Lucasarts VS Sierra rivalry?). However, Double Fine wants to focus on their own IPs moving forward with completely original content.
We can’t wait to see what comes next
No matter what Schafer plans to do moving forward, Microsoft’s acquisition certainly made things easier in the funding department. The founder expressed gratitude towards having the funding to make better use of his time making games we love.
