The Last of Us HBO Series Won’t Air in 2022
It’s been nearly two years since Sony and HBO announced that they’d be making a TV series based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, and with filming and production on the show having been gaining momentum in recent weeks and months, many had hoped that it would air later in the year. It seems that won’t be the case though.
Speaking recently with Deadline, HBO and HBO Max’s programming chief Casey Bloys said that the show is still shooting in Canada and “looks amazing”, but is not going to air in 2022- though it might next year.
“It’s not going to air in 2022,” Bloys said. “They are still shooting in Canada. I imagine you will see it in ’23.”
He added: “I have seen some early episodes and I’m very excited. Craig [Mazin, writer and executive producer] did Chernobyl for us, he is a fantastic writer and director. What I’ve seen looks amazing, so I’m excited for it, but it will not be in ’22.”
Given that the show is expected to wrap up filming roughly halfway through this year, many had expected that it would be ready to air by late 2022, so this might come as a bit of a disappointment- though of course, the hope now would be that it’s ready to go in the early months of next year.
As for what Naughty Dog might have cooking up with The Last of Us where games are concerned, recent leaks have claimed that a standalone multiplayer The Last of Us game and a remake of the original The Last of Us could release by the end of this year. Read more on that through here.
