A new snippet of Horizon Forbidden West gameplay has been released, showing off just how pretty this game manages to look even on the base PlayStation 4. The gameplay video is just 20 seconds long, but there’s sumptuous lighting and tons of environmental detail to take in.

The video has been released to add a sample of base PS4 capture alongside the PS4 Pro videos that were released at the end of January. While it’s hardly a long and in depth performance analysis, it’s certainly encouraging from the perspective of showing the level of fidelity that Guerrilla Games and Sony are confident of achieving on the original PlayStation 4. Up until recently, all we had to go on were some still images.

Of course, the game is targeting a resolution at or close to 1080p and 30fps gameplay, while the PS4 Pro will likely be aiming for a dynamic resolution between 1440p and 1800p – the first game ran with 1800p and checkerboarding. It’s the PlayStation 5 that will get to cut loose with either a quality or performance mode, the latter of which allows the game to run at 60fps. All of that nuance is difficult to get across in a YouTube video…

Horizon Forbidden West will release on February 18th 2022, having missed its intended 2021 release target. As a cross-gen release for both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Sony caused a bit of a stink when revealing their upgrade plans (or lack thereof), quickly U-turning to stick to the spirit of previous statements they had made to now offer free upgrades from PS4 to PS5. Great news for those stuck on the older generation during the current console shortages, as everyone that wants can pick up the game without worrying about future upgrade fees on this occasion.

Horizon Forbidden West was revealed as one of the top games in our 2022 Most Wanted list, coming in at number 3. Read our thoughts on the upcoming PlayStation exclusive here. Oh, and at this point in time, we’re also allowed to confirm that we’ve got review code in. Keep an eye out for reviews dropping on 14th February. Will games critics love it?
